To My Son

I wish so many things for you and you are not even here yet.
Some days I think of all the little things I want for you and then other days I think about the bigger picture, the really great milestones i want you to hit with ease and happiness. Most parents want better for their children than they had but I must be honest, I had so much and the things I didn't have made me a stronger person in the end.

I want you to come into this world crying. i want to hear your grand entrance and know you are OK... that the last 9 months I did OK for you. i want to count your ten finger and ten toes and see you smile. Not just at the beginning but I want to see you smile over and over for many years.

I want you to have your heart broken because you will learn someday that a broken heart is healed through time, patience and a lot of strength. This pain will help you develop a sense of character. Do not worry I will be there to pick up the million little pieces that first time you are pushed on the playground or a girl tells you that she no longer loves you. I will tell you that I will always love you but that will no matter. But dear son trust me when I tell you that there are bigger things in this world than a broken heart.

I wish success for you. From captain of your youth basketball team to president of your department at work. I dream of the day I will straighten your tie and smile into your familiar eyes at all the things you have done so right. And do not worry you will do many things wrong to but that is OK as long as at then end of everyday you are happy, that is all I care about...please always remember that sweetheart.

I hope you have a chance to chase down every dream big or small. Weather it is to play guitar like your dad or travel the map. I support your decision in life as long as you are the one making them.... do not let the world (that can be a cruel place) or any one person decide YOUR destiny. Your life is YOUR life be strong son, strong enough to decided where you want life to take you.

I wish you love. I know you will receive love from your family for may years to come but their is a love bigger than that. A love not that you are not given by fate but a love you choose. I hope you find love in a best friends smile and someday in the eyes of your wife and your own child.

Most of all I hope you have a chance to visit and revisit the tiny little things in life that so many other people pass by without a second thought. The smell of a spring day, the smile on a dog's face as they pass by the sidewalk, a dripping ice cream cone on the hottest day of the year. Yes I wish you a fully happy life. Not a life without suffering or hardship but a life where you learn live and complete at a ripe old happy age. For you my dear dear boy I wish everything that is good.

Please know that no matter where you go, no matter what you do I will always always love you.
